Lorraine Simonis – US Teaching Assistantship in Austria

Name: Lorraine Simonis

Class Year: 2014

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Major(s): MRST, German Language

Opportunity and Year: US Teaching Assistantships at Austrian Secondary Schools, 2014-15

Project Summary: I will be serving as an English teaching assistant in two Austrian secondary schools.

How did W&L prepare you for this opportunity? My German major, particularly my work with Professors Kramer and Youngman, influenced my decision to apply. More generally, my many writing-based classes helped me develop the writing skills necessary to answer essay and short-answer questions on the application.

Why did you apply for this opportunity? I thought it would be a good opportunity to develop my teaching skills, improve my German, and represent the US in a positive way abroad.

Post-graduation Plans: After my year in Austria, I’ll be attending law school at the University of Virginia (Fall 2015).

How will this opportunity help you achieve your goals? The teaching assistantship doesn’t directly relate to my future legal studies, but I think any opportunity that challenges you intellectually and exposes you to a different culture and way of thinking is a valuable one.
