Fellowships and Opportunities

Laurie Lee–William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship

Name: Laurie Lee

Class Year: 2022

Hometown: St. Louis, MO

Major(s): English, Computer Science

Opportunity and Year: William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship at the American University in Dubai, Summer 2019

Project Summary: I will be studing abroad at American University-Dubai for the summer semester

How did W&L prepare you for this opportunity? Dean Campbell recommended this fellowship to me; without her help I would not have even known about the opportunity, much less applied. Also, taking classes in Religion and Politics, I was able to approach the application with a much more well-rounded and global point of view. I took global Politics and a Religion class on the Qur’an– all classes that were out of my comfort zone, but fulfilled the liberal arts emphasis at W&L.

Why did you apply for this opportunity? I wanted to study in the Middle East, as it is a region I have learned about in class. Although I can read about the Middle East, nothing compares to immersion as a means to understanding a culture.

How will this opportunity help you achieve your goals? This opportunity will help me flesh out my academic goals as I am still largely unsure of the path I want to pursue. Studying in the Middle East will also push me to understand my own identity, as AUD has such an internationally diverse student body with many new perspectives from which I can learn.
