Name: Kevin Lencioni
Class Year: 2019
Hometown: Rochester Hills, MI
Major(s): German, Economics
Opportunity and Year: US Teaching Assistantships at Austrian Secondary Schools, 2019-20
Project Summary: I will be teaching various subjects in English at a business school in Eisenerz, Austria.
How did W&L prepare you for this opportunity? Learning about Austrian cities and culture through my German classes, as well as studying abroad in Berlin have been helpful in preparing for this opportunity. Not only does the German department at W&L do a great job of developing language skills, it also ensures that students learn about the culture, literature, and history of German speaking countries. The detailed knowledge I have gained during my four years has prepared me well for this position.
Why did you apply for this opportunity? As soon as I came home from studying in Berlin, I knew I wanted to spend part of my professional career in a German speaking country. Being immersed in a different culture allows for a certain level of personal growth that cannot be simulated in a classroom. I am excited to step outside of my comfort zone and develop my German language skills to become fluent.
Post-graduation Plans: I am currently taking things one step at a time. I think I will have a better idea of the direction I want to go in following this teaching assistantship. I may decide to stay in Europe or come back to the states to further pursue my career.
How will this opportunity help you achieve your goals? I believe that being a part of a new community will foster personal growth, and the connections I will make will open doors to multiple career paths in the future.
I am a member of the Varsity Men’s Soccer Team and Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
I studied abroad as a sophomore in Berlin, Germany during Spring term 2017.
