Hashim Syed–Gilman Scholarship
Name: Hashim Syed
Class Year: 2019
Hometown: Lawrenceville, GA
Minors or Concentrations: Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies (Arabic Language Emphasis)
Opportunity and Year: Gilman Scholarship Program, Summer 2018
Project Summary: I will spend the summer in Meknes, Morocco studying the Arabic language and immersing myself in the rich culture of Morocco. While there, I will enroll at the Arab-American Language Institute in Morocco, to study Arabic in the 8 week summer intensive program.
How did W&L prepare you for this opportunity? Dean Campbell and my Arabic Professor, Dr. Edwards, were instrumental for me in taking advantage of this opportunity. I had no idea the Gilman Scholarship existed until Dean Campbell made me aware of the opportunity, and with her and Dr. Edwards help perfecting my essays, I was awarded a scholarship.
Why did you apply for this opportunity? I have taken Arabic at Washington and Lee since my first year, and I wanted to continue improving my language skills as well as using what I had learned at Washington and Lee in the real world. I had no set plans or expectations for this summer and Dr. Edwards suggested I look into the AALIM Study abroad program in Morocco to continue my education.
Post-graduation Plans: I plan to apply for a Fulbright Research award in Morocco after graduating, so studying there this summer will strengthen my application as well as serve as a trial run so that I am better prepared to face the challenges I may face in Morocco, if I am awarded the Fulbright.
