Project Summary: The William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship at the American University in Dubai seeks to further the goals of the Clinton Presidential Foundation to strengthen the capacity of people in the United States and throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence. In partnership with the American University in Dubai, the program provides American students based in the US the opportunity to expand their educational and cultural horizons by studying in the Arab world.

How did W&L prepare you for this opportunity? Washington and Lee and the Politics Department in particular helped prepare me for my time in Dubai by educating me on what to expect while abroad in the Middle East. Professor Mark Rush briefed me on his experiences in the United Arab Emirates, and this helped me quickly adapt to the local customs and culture. I also felt that W&L adequately prepared me to handle the course load of 6 classes that I took while in Dubai.

Why did you apply for this opportunity? I applied for the William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship because I wanted to study abroad in the Middle East, and the American University in Dubai offered me the opportunity to complete a Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies and take Arabic while immersing myself in the local culture and traditions.

Post-graduation Plans: I plan to attend graduate school for international relations/foreign services and continue studying the Arabic language.

How will this opportunity help you achieve your goals? My experiences in Dubai have given me a unique perspective to the global politics issues that I have studied in Lexington. I was able to meet people from all over the world and listen to views and perspectives that I could have never heard by simply completing my four years in the US.
