National Security Education Program/Boren African Languages Flagship Initiative

The NSEP African Languages Initiative (AFLI) offers Boren Scholarship and Fellowship applicants the opportunity to study African languages and cultures by participating in domestic and overseas language programs in one of the following languages:  

  • French
  • Swahili-
  • Akan/Twi
  • Hausa
  • Wolof
  • Yoruba
  • Zulu
  • Portuguese

The specifics of the program vary with the language, but most involve a domestic language program followed by a fall or year study abroad program.

Undergraduate students are eligible to apply for the Boren Scholarship AFLI Program. Law students are eligible to apply for the Boren Fellowship AFLI Program.
