IIE Generation Study Abroad Funding

Founded in 1919, the Institute of International Education (IIE) is a private not-for-profit leader in the international exchange of people and ideas. In collaboration with governments, foundations and other sponsors, IIE creates programs of study and training for students, educators and professionals from all sectors. These programs include the Fulbright Program and Gilman Scholarships administered for the U.S. Department of State and the Boren Awards.

The Generation Study Abroad grants will be made available for U.S. students from a broad range of backgrounds to make it possible for them to participate in academic, internship or service-learning experiences abroad. The scholarship program is intended to diversify study abroad and to encourage students to go abroad who would otherwise not participate in an international experience as part of their college education, especially in support of high-achieving, low-income students. The Travel Grants can be used not only for travel to and from the country of study, but also within the region, enabling students to make the most of their international experience.

A cohort of exceptional undergraduate students will be selected, with consideration given to the following factors: financial need; status as first-generation college students; status as members of underrepresented racial/ethnic/gender groups; disabilities; and the lack of experience with travel abroad. The Travel Grant would help provide these students with international opportunities that are in line with their academic and professional goals, and essential for today’s graduates
