ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship

ThinkSwiss Scholarships support highly motivated and qualified U.S. and Canadian undergraduate and graduate students to get a research experience or to participate in a summer school course in Switzerland.

Todd Jones ’85 Memorial Scholarship

The Todd Jones ’85 Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999 by family and friends to honor the memory of Todd Jones (1963-1996). Preference is given to Washington and Lee students with a demonstrated interest in music and drama. Award recipients receive funds for a travel study experience that will enhance their own artistic development and thereby strengthen the performing arts on campus.

Todd Smith Fellowship

The Todd Smith Fellowship supports an internship with El Nuevo Herald in Miami, Fla., including an international reporting experience accompanied by a full-time reporter and/or photographer.  W&L students who are declared majors in Journalism or Business Journalism may apply. Graduating seniors are eligible. Proficiency in a Spanish is required

Turkish Coalition of America Study Abroad Scholarships for Minority Students

The Turkish Coalition of America provides up to 100 scholarships per year for students of the following backgrounds:

US Teaching Assistantships at Austrian Secondary Schools

Each year, more than 140 college graduates from the United States teach in Austria under the auspices of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture’s (BMUKK) Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship Program. The purpose of this program is to bring talented and enthusiastic young people from abroad into the classrooms of secondary schools in communities large and small all over Austria. Ultimately, it is the job of these native speakers as teaching assistants to make learning a foreign language a lively cross-cultural encounter for their students.

US-Brazil Exchange

The US-Brazil Consortium fosters university partnerships through the exchange of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff within the context of bilateral curricular development to increase cross-national education, training opportunities, and joint research in a wide range of academic and professional disciplines. Students benefit from having an international curriculum and cultural dimension added to their studies through a combination of bilateral curricular innovation and study abroad.

US-UK Fulbright Summer Institutes for US Undergraduates

The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers special Summer Institutes for US citizens to come to the UK. These summer programmes provide the opportunity for US undergraduates (aged over 18), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to the UK on a three, four, five or six week academic and cultural summer programme.

Virginia Program at Oxford

The Virginia Program at Oxford is a Washington and Lee-sponsored, interdisciplinary summer school program based in St. Anne’s College, Oxford University. The six-week program, which is open to students of any major after their first year, examines the history and literature of Renaissance England. Instruction follows the English system of higher education, combining daily lectures by renowned, British scholars with small, weekly tutorials.

Walter J. Jensen Fellowship

The Walter J. Jensen Fellowship is awarded for at least six months of study in France. The purpose of the award is to help educators and researchers improve education in standard French language, literature and culture and in the study of standard French in the United States. The fellowship is awarded annually and has a stipend of at least $10,000. Phi Beta Kappa will also cover a single round-trip, economy-class ticket for the recipient to travel to France; some additional support may be available to those with dependents.

Washington and Lee Student Summer Independent Research (SSIR)

Developed as a complement to the Washington and Lee Summer Research Scholars Program, which promotes collaborative research between students and faculty members during the summer, the Student Summer Independent Research (SSIR) grants support rising seniors in the pursuit of their own research or creative interest, with the mentorship of a faculty member.
