Samuel Taylor – American Chamber of Commerce Summer Internship in Germany

Project Summary: The AmCham program gives college students at certain American universities the opportunity to intern for a company in Germany over the summer. Students first apply to the program, which sends the applications to multiple firms. Companies then individually reach out to students and extend invitations for interviews to determine which applicants are offered an internship.

I had the chance to work for Fresenius Kabi, which is one of the entities of a healthcare company based right outside of Frankfurt am Main. I interned in the project management office of the Nucleus Program, a Fresenius Kabi transformation project aimed at building a harmonized IT landscape and globally standardized processes. My tasks included the administration of the project’s Sharepoint site, monitoring and updating the project’s budget, preparing domain status reports, and onboarding new employees.

Meera Kumar – Fulbright Research Grant to India

Project Summary: The rural woman has played a seminal role in the development of modern art in South Asia, her body used to express everything from nationalist sentiment to statements of social justice. To create a narrative of what it means to be a village woman, I will analyze artistic depictions by professional artists such as Jamini Roy and Arpita Singh, as well as local female artisans. I will be based in Santiniketan, a pastoral university town in West Bengal.

I was also able to apply for the CLEA grant along with the Fulbright. Certain Fulbright countries fund language study and I’m actually going to learn Bengali for 3 months before beginning my research.

Project Summary: The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. I used the funds to cover a W&L spring term abroad course in China, studying language and culture for 6 weeks. As long as a minimum four weeks are spent abroad, you are eligible to apply. In addition, you must complete a follow-on service project. My service project is to expand study abroad and scholarship outreach at my former charter school, on the W&L campus, and throughout the national QuestBridge Scholars Network.

Project Summary: The AmCham US-German program is a partnership between the American Chamber of Commerce and a host of German companies. After initial applicant screening, the Chamber of Commerce and its sponsors essentially operate as intermediaries as the remaining student applicants go through rounds of interviews with prospective firms. Ultimately, around 30 American students every year are chosen to complete three-month language and work intensive internships throughout Germany.

Personally, I am interning with Ernst & Young at their Frankfurt am Main office. Within the firm, I work specifically in the US Tax Department preparing returns and providing guidance and compliance for American companies operating in Germany, wealthy German individuals holding American assets, and vice versa.

Project Summary: The AmCham internship program offers American students an opportunity to pursue a three-month summer internship in a German company. Although most companies are financial institutions, other firms outside the finance industry are also available. Participating companies are able to view students’ profiles on the AmCham web-site and select a candidate who matches their criteria.

I am interning at DZ Bank in Frankfurt in the Strategy and Control Department. DZ Bank is a cooperative bank that functions both as a corporate and investment bank and as a central institution for the local cooperative banks. DZ BANK fulfils the holding function for the DZ BANK Group, which consists of various specialized financial institutions, such as Bausparkasse Schwäbisch Hall, a building society; TeamBank, a provider of consumer finance; Union Investment Group, an asset management company; and others.

The main task of my department is to analyze the performance of different operating divisions of the bank and support a strategic dialogue between DZ’s subsidiaries and the management board. My daily work involves analyzing financial statements, calculating financial ratios, creating PowerPoint presentations for both our internal divisions and external clients, and translating numerous documents and presentations into English.
